Shopify Migration Center: Planning Guide

A successful Shopify migration protects revenue, customer experience, operational data, and organic search visibility while creating a cleaner foundation for growth.

Migration inventory

  • Products, variants, collections, inventory, and media
  • Customers, order history, discounts, gift cards, and accounts
  • Pages, articles, policies, navigation, and forms
  • Domains, URLs, metadata, rankings, backlinks, and redirects
  • Payments, tax, shipping, fulfilment, email, and support workflows
  • Apps, integrations, analytics, pixels, and consent configuration

Protect SEO during the move

Crawl the current site before migration, map every valuable old URL to its most relevant new destination, preserve useful content, and avoid redirecting unrelated pages to the homepage. Validate canonical tags, robots directives, sitemap entries, structured data, and analytics before and after launch.

Use a staged launch plan

Test with representative products, customer scenarios, addresses, discounts, payments, fulfilment rules, notifications, and devices. Assign an owner to each exception and prepare a rollback or manual contingency for business-critical integrations.

Establish a pre-migration baseline

Before changing platforms, record current organic traffic, revenue by landing page, conversion rate, top search queries, indexed URLs, backlink destinations, page speed, and the performance of major customer journeys. This baseline makes post-launch diagnosis possible. Without it, a team may know that results changed but not which templates, markets, or channels were affected.

Map data before importing it

Define how every source field maps to Shopify products, variants, collections, customers, orders, pages, articles, and metafields. Clean duplicate values, invalid media, inconsistent options, and obsolete tags before the main import. Run a representative test migration and compare record counts, relationships, media, pricing, inventory, and localized content.

Redirect and content validation

Build redirects from the final legacy URL inventory, including alternate formats, historic campaign pages, and URLs that receive backlinks. Map each old URL to the closest relevant new page. Validate internal links and canonical tags after launch, and keep the redirect map under version control so unexpected changes can be traced.

The first 30 days after launch

  • Monitor crawl errors, index coverage, rankings, analytics, and revenue daily during the initial period.
  • Compare payment failures, fulfilment exceptions, returns, and support contacts with the baseline.
  • Confirm feeds, email journeys, pixels, consent, and third-party integrations.
  • Fix high-impact template issues before making broad design changes.
